Bio
AC Carter (b. Birmingham, Alabama) is a musician and visual artist based in Los Angeles, CA. Working across music, graphic design, technology, character building, fashion, performance, and painting, Carter's work investigates themes of gender, love, class, and the American Dream. A 2020 MFA Sculpture graduate from the University of Georgia, much of the materials Carter uses are words, audio, synthesizers, paint, technology, hardware supplies, fabric, and social media. Carter’s current focus is on their musical pop persona, Klypi (pronounced like the 96’ Windows Office Assistant). Klypi is an alien, from a small planet in the Milky Way, who - after discovering “rock music” from NASA’s Voyager Golden Record, travels to Earth to pursue their dream of becoming a pop star. However, once landed and ingrained into Earth - redact - American-life, they soon realize the dream that drove them was a myth all along. How does Klypi continue to pursue a life as an artist while also fitting into a ridged and rigged society?
Carter’s work has been featured in publications such as Post-Punk Online, WUSSY Mag, LADYGUNN, Weirdo Music Forever, New American Painting, Athen’s Flagpole, and the Nashville Scene. Carter attended the Stove Works Residency in Chattanooga in November 2020 and the Wassaic Project Residency in Winter 2022. As a musician, Carter has performed at Dynasty Handbag’s Weirdo Night at Zebulon in Los Angeles and has opened for a variety of artists including Will Butler + Sister Squares, Molly Nilsson, John Maus, Jennifer Vanilla, David Microwave, and many others. Carter has also performed at festivals like Big Ears, Secret Stages, and Athens Popfest. In 2024, they released their first self-produced album through Lolipop Records—writing, recording, producing, and designing the record as a giant floppy disk. As an artist, Carter has shown at bitforms in NYC, Zeitgeist Gallery in Nashville, and Torrance Shipman Gallery in Brooklyn. Carter has also designed garments for performing artists such as Kevin Barnes' Of Montreal music video “No Plateau Phase / No Careerism, No Corruption” and Jennifer Vanilla’s performance at MoMA PS1.
